Speeding up DNA Testing
A fast-growing British bio-tech company are expanding their product range, to enable laboratories and hospitals to speed up the analysis of DNA tests.
Bee Robotics Ltd, based at their headquarters in Wales, will next week (19th November- Hall 3, Stand 3G57) launch a new addition to the family of automated robotic intruments in Dusseldorf, at Europe’s largest medical supplies trade exhibition.
The AutoCam 48 speeds up the analysis of DNA testing for strip based assays. Adding to Bee Robotics Ltd’s fully automated Bee Blot and its semi-automated Baby Bee machines, the Autocam48 has been developed to ease the proess of interpretation of strips for laboratories. The product will be going into production during the first quarter of next year. Visit Bee Robotics’ stand at Hall 3, Stand 3G57 at Medica for a demonstration.
Steve Jones, Managing Director of Bee Robotics Ltd said: “Following on the successes of the Bee Blot and Baby Bee instruments since we established the company in 1999, demand showed the need in the market to develop a scanner that can ease the process of interpretation of strips for the laboratories. As a fully automated instrument, it will process strips directly in the rack, which will eliminate a critical manual step.
“The software checks the X and Y movement to ensure a reliable run every time, and each strip is interpreted as a histogram with a virtual image and notepad for the user. The Windows-based user interface has a simple layout to reduce training time.”

Notes for Editors
Company background
- Established in 1999, Bee Robotics produces automatic liquid handling robotic instruments - vital specialist equipment used for matching recpients and donors in a potential transplant situation – and have been awarded for its success in the field of innovation and creativity.
- To date the company’s success has so far exceeded their expectations with production up on their initial target by more than three times and export to Germany, USA, France, Italy and Japan and are talking to several other distributors in other countries.
- Steve Jones and Alwyn Morus are the executive directors responsible for the day to day running of Bee Robotics Ltd. Combining their collective experience of industrial electronics and robotics and Computer-Aided Design, both Directors are well positioned to gear the company and continuously develop their product range to respond to a rapidly moving market.
- They are an ISO 9001/2000 registered company and certified by the Underwriters’ Laboratory and Canadian Standards Association.
AutoCam 48 - Newly launched – November 2003!
- Designed and manufactured by Bee Robotics Ltd, the Autocam48 has been developed to ease the process of interpretation of strips for laboratories.
- A fully automated instrument, it will process strips directly in the rack, which will eliminate a critical manual step. Polarised racks will ensure that the rack can only be inserted into the BeeBlot and AutoCam48 in one direction to help track sample identification. The software checks the X and Y movement to ensure a reliable run every time. Each strip is interpreted as a histogram with a virtual image and notepad for the user.
- The Windows-based user interface has a simple layout to reduce training time
- No manual handling – strips remain in rack
- High throughput – 48 strips interpreted in approx 10 min
- Minimum human error – polarized racks for one-way insertion
- High sensitivity – dark environment for high sensitivity
- Detailed strip information – virtual image and histogram of strips
- Traceability – time and date of run is saved automatically and notes can be added to trip information
Specifications:
Capacity: 48 strips per run
